How to Use Digital Wellbeing on Android in Pakistan: Screen Time, Focus Mode and Bedtime Tips

6 min read No comments

Your phone is the first thing you reach for in the morning and the last thing you put down at night. In Pakistan, cheap mobile data and apps like WhatsApp, TikTok and YouTube make screen time creep up fast: a quick message check turns into half an hour of scrolling, and study, work and sleep all suffer.

The good news is that your Android phone already has a free built-in toolkit for this. It is called Digital Wellbeing, and it comes with most phones sold in Pakistan, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Infinix, Tecno, Oppo, Vivo and Pixel.

Where to Find Digital Wellbeing

Open Settings and scroll down to Digital Wellbeing and parental controls. On Samsung phones the name is the same, and on most other brands it is too, though the layout inside can look slightly different.

Tap it and you will see a dashboard showing how much time you spent on your phone today, which apps you used most, how many times you unlocked it, and how many notifications you received. The first look can be a surprise: many people discover that social media and video apps take up two or three hours a day without them realising it.

Understanding the Dashboard

The Dashboard lists every app you have used, with the time spent on each. Tapping an app shows its own report: total time, number of notifications, and how many times you opened it.

This matters because you cannot fix what you cannot see. Whether you are a student in Lahore preparing for exams or a freelancer in Karachi juggling clients on WhatsApp, the Dashboard shows which apps are eating your productive hours. Check it once a week and ask one question: did my phone time match my priorities this week?

App Timers: Set a Daily Limit

App Timers are the most practical feature in Digital Wellbeing. They let you set a daily time limit for any app. Once you reach it, the app icon turns grey and the app pauses for the rest of the day.

To set one, open Digital Wellbeing, tap the Dashboard, and tap the small hourglass icon next to the app. Choose a time, for example 45 minutes for TikTok or one hour for YouTube, and tap OK. Timers reset at midnight.

Start with generous limits. If you spend three hours a day on social media, jumping straight to 30 minutes will feel impossible. Cut your usage by about a third, then reduce it again.

Focus Mode: Silence Distractions

Focus Mode is for the moments when you need to concentrate. When it is on, the apps you choose are paused and their notifications are silenced, so no message preview or video alert pulls you away while you study, work or spend time with family.

To set it up, open Digital Wellbeing and tap Focus Mode. Choose the apps that distract you most, such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and mobile games. Leave WhatsApp and your phone app active if family or work need to reach you.

Set a schedule or turn it on manually: many students in Pakistan use it during study hours, for example from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Bedtime Mode: Protect Your Sleep

Late-night phone use is one of the biggest sleep problems in Pakistan, especially among students and young professionals. The blue light from screens and the “just one more video” habit can push bedtime from 11 pm to 1 am without you noticing.

Open Digital Wellbeing, tap Bedtime Mode, and set your usual bedtime and wake-up time. When it starts, your phone switches to greyscale, which makes the screen dull and far less appealing, and it silences notifications.

Set Bedtime Mode to start 30 minutes before your target sleep time, and charge your phone away from your bed. Many people find their sleep improves within a week simply because the phone is no longer within arm’s reach.

Parental Controls and Family Link

If you are a parent and your child uses an Android phone or tablet, Digital Wellbeing links to Google’s Family Link. From the Digital Wellbeing screen, tap Set up parental controls and follow the steps to link your child’s device to your Google account.

With Family Link, you can see your child’s screen time, set daily limits, approve or block app downloads from the Play Store, and set a bedtime for their device. The controls are meant to guide, not to spy, so agree on the limits with your child together.

Practical Daily Tips

Keep your most distracting apps off your home screen. Move them into a folder or the app drawer, so opening them takes an extra step. Turn off non-essential notifications under Settings, then Notifications, switching off alerts for shopping apps, games and news apps while keeping calls and family messages on.

Charge your phone outside your bedroom at night if you can: this one change does more for sleep than any app setting. Finally, replace rather than just remove: fill a freed hour with something you enjoy, like an evening walk, reading, or time with family.

Common Problems and Quick Fixes

If Digital Wellbeing is not tracking your usage, check that it has permission to access usage data. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Special app access, then Usage access, and make sure Digital Wellbeing is allowed. If App Timers are not working, check that you have not accidentally turned them off.

If Bedtime Mode does not switch on at the scheduled time, check that Do Not Disturb permissions are granted and that your phone’s clock and time zone are set correctly for Pakistan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Digital Wellbeing free on Android phones in Pakistan?
Yes. It is built into Android and free on all phones that include it.

Can I use Digital Wellbeing to limit my child’s phone use?
Yes. Use the parental controls option to set up Google Family Link, then set limits and a bedtime for your child’s device from your own phone.

Does Focus Mode block phone calls?
No. Focus Mode pauses the apps you select and silences their notifications, but calls still come through.

Will App Timers stop working if I restart my phone?
No. Timers stay in place after a restart and reset at midnight each day.

Conclusion

Digital Wellbeing is one of the most useful features already on your Android phone, yet many people in Pakistan never open it. It takes only a few minutes to set up: check your Dashboard, put a timer on your most distracting app, schedule Focus Mode for study or work hours, and switch on Bedtime Mode for better sleep.

Open Digital Wellbeing today, look at your numbers honestly, and set one limit.
