A total of 441 farmers in Jhang district will receive subsidised Green Tractors under the Punjab government’s scheme, after being selected through a draw, and 41 of them were handed their keys at a ceremony in the district on 5 November 2026.
The distribution is part of the first phase of the programme in Jhang. The tractors are being provided at a subsidised rate under the Punjab government’s farmer support policy, with the stated aim of putting modern machinery within reach of growers who could not otherwise afford it.
The key-distribution ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioner Captain (retired) Abdul Rehman, along with former members of the Punjab Assembly Muhammad Aslam Bharwana, Faisal Hayat Jabboana and Sultan Sikandar Bharwana. The four handed over the keys to the 41 farmers present at the ceremony.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Commissioner said the Punjab government was taking effective steps to bring agriculture onto modern lines, to reduce farmers’ costs and to raise agricultural production. He described the subsidised Green Tractor scheme as part of that farmer-friendly policy, aimed at giving growers access to modern machinery and improving their economic condition.
He added that using modern machinery makes it easier to prepare land on time, to look after crops properly and to carry out farm work efficiently. Agriculture, he said, holds basic importance in the national economy, and agricultural progress is not possible without the prosperity of farmers. The district administration, he said, would play its part in making sure the Punjab government’s farmer-friendly measures were implemented transparently.
The timing of the distribution matters for Jhang’s growers. The district is in the middle of the wheat-sowing window for irrigated areas, which runs to 20 November, and a tractor of a farmer’s own makes timely land preparation far more likely than hiring one at the peak of the season, when machines are in short supply and hire rates climb. The district also came through a damaging flood season earlier this year, and many growers are rebuilding after losing standing crops and stored inputs.
For the 441 farmers selected, the tractor is not only a machine but a change in how the season is managed. Owning a tractor means a grower can prepare the land when the soil and the calendar demand it, rather than waiting for a hired machine to become free. It also means the machine is available for the rest of the year’s work — threshing, transport and the preparation of the next crop — rather than for a single hired job.
What the report does not say is how much subsidy each farmer receives, what models of tractor are being supplied, or when the remaining 400 farmers will receive their machines. The report describes the 441 as selected by draw in the first phase, and the 41 as the first group to receive keys, but it gives no timetable for the rest. Those details have not been published, and this article does not fill them in.
Farmers who were not selected in this draw will also want to know whether there will be a second phase and how to apply for it. No such announcement has been reported yet. Until one is made, growers should rely on the Agriculture Department’s district office and the official scheme announcements rather than on agents who claim to secure a tractor for a fee.
The Green Tractor scheme sits alongside other support measures for Jhang’s growers this season. A ten-day wheat awareness campaign, run by the University of Agriculture Faisalabad with the Agriculture Extension Department, is under way until 8 November, sending students and officers into the field to advise farmers on timely sowing, certified seed and line sowing. The tractor distribution and the campaign share the same aim: getting this Rabi season right after a difficult year.
For the 41 farmers who took home keys today, the season starts with a machine of their own. For the other 400 selected, the keys are still to come — and the date they arrive will be the next detail worth confirming.
