One killed, six injured as shop roof collapses in Karachi

At least one person was killed after the roof of a corner confectionery shop collapsed near the New Nazimabad Flyover on Manghopir Road in Karachi on Thursday, rescue services said. Six other people were injured in the collapse, which struck a busy commercial spot and left rescuers working to reach those trapped under the debris.

The deceased, a 43-year-old man, was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Edhi said. The identification of the victim by age, without a name being given in the available reports, reflects the early stage of the response, when the priority is to care for the injured and to account for everyone who was in the shop at the time. Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, one of Karachi’s major public hospitals, received the body, while the injured were also taken for treatment.

A rescue operation was under way at the site. Rescue workers were engaged in clearing the collapsed roof and checking for anyone who might still be trapped beneath it. Operations of this kind are urgent and delicate, as rescuers must move debris carefully to avoid causing further harm to survivors, while also working quickly to reach those who may be injured and unable to call for help. The fact that the operation was described as under way at the time of reporting suggests that the full picture of casualties was still emerging.

The shop was near Shabbir Medical on Manghopir Road, a detail that helps locate the incident for residents of the area. Manghopir Road is a busy thoroughfare in Karachi, and the New Nazimabad Flyover is a well-known landmark nearby. The shop itself was described as a corner confectionery shop, the kind of small neighbourhood business that serves local residents and passers-by, and that would normally have customers and staff present during the day.

The collapse of a shop roof is a sudden and frightening event for those inside and for the surrounding area. Roofs can fail for a range of reasons, including structural weakness, overloading, poor maintenance or the effects of weather and age, but no cause was given in the reports available on Thursday. The focus in the immediate aftermath was on rescue and medical care, rather than on establishing why the structure gave way.

The incident is a reminder of the risks posed by building safety in a city where many small commercial premises operate in older structures. Confectionery shops and other neighbourhood stores are often housed in buildings that have been adapted over time, and the condition of their roofs and walls is not always regularly inspected. When a collapse occurs, the consequences are immediate and severe for those inside, and the rescue effort becomes the central concern.

Edhi, the welfare organisation whose ambulances and volunteers are often among the first to respond to such incidents in Karachi, provided the detail about the deceased being taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The organisation plays a central role in emergency response in the city, and its involvement underlines the scale of the effort required to deal with the collapse.

As the rescue operation continued, the immediate questions were how many people had been in the shop when the roof fell, whether any others remained trapped, and what medical care the six injured people required. The answers to those questions would emerge as rescuers completed their work at the site and as hospitals reported on the condition of those admitted. For the families of the dead and injured, the collapse represents a sudden tragedy in an ordinary setting, a neighbourhood shop on a busy road, where a routine visit turned into a disaster.
