Smog Alert for Jhang: Air Quality Hits Unhealthy 155 — How to Protect Your Family

3 min read No comments

What the numbers mean

Jhang’s air quality index (AQI) currently stands at 155, which falls squarely in the “unhealthy” range. The dominant pollutant is PM2.5 — microscopic dust particles small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. When PM2.5 levels climb, air quality deteriorates sharply, and that’s exactly what Jhang is experiencing right now.

For context, an AQI below 50 is considered good, while anything above 150 is officially unhealthy. At 155, Jhang has crossed into territory where health effects become significant for the general population, not just for those who are already vulnerable.

Who is most at risk

Smog doesn’t affect everyone equally. Children are particularly vulnerable because their lungs are still developing and they breathe faster than adults, taking in more polluted air per kilogram of body weight. Elderly residents, people with asthma or other respiratory conditions, and those with heart disease face the greatest danger during smog episodes.

Pregnant women also need to take special care, as exposure to fine particulate pollution has been linked to complications. Outdoor workers — from traffic wardens to construction labourers — spend hours in the thick of it and should take the strongest precautions.

Symptoms to watch for

Pay attention to your body. Common signs that smog is affecting your health include burning or watery eyes, a scratchy throat, coughing, and a tight feeling in the chest. People with asthma may notice their inhalers are needed more often, while those with heart conditions might feel unusual fatigue or shortness of breath.

If symptoms persist or worsen — especially wheezing, chest pain or severe breathlessness — seek medical attention rather than waiting it out. These are not minor irritations to tough through.

Practical protection: what every family should do today

  • Limit outdoor activity. Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors, especially during morning and evening hours when smog tends to be thickest. Keep children indoors during these peak times.
  • Wear a proper mask outdoors. Ordinary cloth masks do little against PM2.5. Use an N95 or KN95 mask when you must go outside — they filter the fine particles that matter.
  • Seal your home. Keep windows and doors closed during heavy smog hours. If you have an air purifier, run it; if not, a damp cloth over ventilation openings can help reduce dust entry.
  • Avoid adding to the problem. Don’t burn rubbish or crop residue, avoid smoking indoors, and minimise use of diesel generators near living areas.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well. Drinking plenty of water and eating fruit rich in vitamin C helps the body cope with the oxidative stress that air pollution causes.
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours. Elderly people living alone and families with young children may need help — a phone call or a visit can make a real difference.

Why this keeps happening

Jhang’s smog is part of a wider regional pattern. Every autumn, a combination of crop-residue burning, vehicle emissions, industrial activity and dust combines with still, cool air to trap pollution close to the ground. Temperature inversions act like a lid, keeping the haze in place for days at a time.

Until the winds shift and the air clears, the smog is not going anywhere. The realistic response is not to wait it out unprotected, but to adapt: limit exposure, protect the vulnerable, and push for the longer-term measures — cleaner brick kilns, controlled stubble burning and better public transport — that will reduce next year’s smog season.
