Jhang Flood Update: Chenab Water Submerges Around 180 Villages, Roads Cut Off

3 min read No comments

The Chenab has entered Jhang

The flood wave moving down the Chenab River has reached Jhang district in force. According to a Minute Mirror report, the overflowing Chenab entered Jhang after causing widespread destruction in Sialkot, Wazirabad and Chiniot, submerging nearly 180 villages in the district.

Thousands of residents, including women and children, were left stranded and forced to spend the night under the open sky. Floodwaters have destroyed crops on hundreds of acres, and major communication routes have been cut off as roads disappeared under water. Rescue teams are using boats to shift stranded families to safer places.

More water is still coming

The danger is not over. The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department warns that the River Chenab at Marala is expected to remain at high flood level, with Khanki and Qadirabad also expected to attain high flood level — which means high flows will continue moving downstream towards Jhang’s riverine areas.

The FFD advisory says communities in riverine (kacha) areas may face hazardous conditions, standing crops, fodder fields and livestock in low-lying floodplains remain exposed to inundation until river levels recede, and low-lying roads, river crossings and embankment approaches may face localised disruption while high flows persist.

The PDMA Punjab has also issued a high flood alert for the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, naming the Jhang division among the areas where urban and riverine flooding is feared, with district administrations placed on high alert.

What Jhang residents should do now

If you live in or near the riverine belt of Jhang district, treat this as an active emergency, not a distant news story:

  • Move to higher ground early — do not wait for water to reach your street or village, especially after dark.
  • Take documents, medicines, mobile phones and chargers in a waterproof bag; keep a torch and some dry food ready.
  • Move livestock to raised ground and do not tie animals in low-lying areas overnight.
  • Do not cross flooded roads, bridges or causeways — even shallow fast water can sweep away a motorcycle or a person.
  • Follow instructions of the district administration and rescue teams, and minimise all movement near riverbanks while high flows persist.

The bigger picture

This is the same flood system that Jhang News Network has been tracking — from the first alerts to the large-scale relief and rescue operations across the district, and the Chief Minister’s visit to flood-hit areas. With the Chenab still at high flood upstream, the next 24 to 48 hours remain critical for Jhang’s low-lying villages. JNN will update this coverage as official figures and fresh advisories are issued.
