Jhang Court Sentences Attempted-Murder Convict Alam Sher to 14 Years and Heavy Fine

2 min read No comments

A local court in Jhang has handed down a 14-year prison sentence and a heavy fine to a man convicted of attempted murder and causing permanent disability, closing a case that began with a shooting in the Mochiwala area more than three years ago.

The verdict

Civil Judge and Magistrate Muhammad Shakeel Ashraf announced the sentence against Alam Sher after finding the prosecution’s evidence and witness statements strong enough to sustain the convictions. The court split the punishment across the two charges: seven years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs100,000 for attempted murder — with an additional three months behind bars if the fine is not paid — plus another seven years for causing disability, along with compensation of Rs3,378,951 to the victim and a further Rs50,000 in additional compensation.

The prosecution was led by advocate Sheikh Hameed Abdullah, whose case rested on the evidence gathered after the original attack and the testimony of witnesses.

The 2023 attack

According to the case record, Alam Sher was accused in September 2023 of shooting Muhammad Ramzan in the Mochiwala area. The victim survived but was severely injured — the gunshot wound was so serious that his leg had to be amputated. Mochiwala police registered charges of attempted murder and related offences against the accused soon after the incident.

Three years on, the court’s judgment treated the attack as what the law recognises as two distinct wrongs: the attempt to take a life, and the permanent physical harm that followed. That is why the sentence runs in two parts, and why the compensation figures are so substantial — the law ties the payment to the lifelong disability the victim must now live with.

The court’s message

In announcing the verdict, the court stressed that delivering justice in such serious cases is essential for peace and security in society, and for the protection of human life and property. Sentences of this scale are meant to signal that violent crime carries consequences far beyond the moment of the attack.

For the victim’s family, the judgment closes the criminal chapter — the convictions are secured and the compensation orders are on the books. Whether the financial awards are actually recovered will depend on enforcement proceedings, which often run into delays when convicts lack assets. But the custodial sentence itself begins now.
