Three of a Family Killed as Tractor-Trolley Runs Over Them on Shorkot–Rafiqui Road

Three members of a family, including two young children, were killed on Saturday night after their motorcycle collided with a rickshaw and a tractor-trolley ran over them on the Shorkot Cantonment–Rafiqui Airbase Road.

The crash happened near Chak 43GB in Pirmahal tehsil, on the road that links Shorkot in Jhang district with the Rafiqui Airbase. According to Rescue 1122, whose account was reported by Dawn, the family was travelling on a motorcycle when it collided head-on with a motorcycle rickshaw. The family fell onto the road, and a tractor-trolley coming behind ran over them.

Muhammad Yasin, 50, of Kamalia, his wife and their two children were all critically injured in the crash. Yasin later died of his injuries, along with his eight-year-old daughter Sahira Fatima and his seven-year-old son Muhammad Saif. His wife and the rickshaw driver were still under treatment in hospital when the report was published. The report does not name the hospital.

The report does not say whether the tractor-trolley driver stopped at the scene, whether a case has been registered, or what action police have taken. None of that should be assumed; the verified facts are the collision, the deaths and the injuries as reported by Rescue 1122.

The Shorkot Cantonment–Rafiqui Airbase Road is a busy link used by a mix of traffic: motorcycles and rickshaws carrying families, cars, and slow-moving tractor-trolleys hauling loads. At night, when visibility drops and headlights are often weak or missing on smaller vehicles, that mix turns dangerous quickly. A motorcycle carrying a whole family has no protection at all when a collision throws its riders onto the road, and a heavy vehicle following behind has almost no chance to stop in time.

The deaths add to a heavy toll of road crashes in the area. Rescue 1122 in Jhang district alone answered 7,641 emergencies during October, and 1,039 of those were road accidents, according to figures released by District Emergency Officer Engineer Sultan Mahmood and reported on 4 November. Across those October emergencies, 144 people lost their lives. The figures cover Jhang district, while this crash took place just across the boundary in Pirmahal tehsil, but the pattern is the same on both sides of it: ordinary journeys on mixed-traffic roads ending in deaths that better lighting, slower speeds and helmets might have prevented.

Road safety campaigners regularly make the same points after crashes like this one, and they bear repeating. Motorcycles should not carry more passengers than they are built for, children should not travel unprotected on them, and tractor-trolleys should carry lights and reflectors so that other drivers can see them in time. None of those points can be tied to this particular crash from the information available, and it would be wrong to blame the victims for what happened. But the crash is a reminder of how little margin for error there is on these roads at night.

For the family from Kamalia, the loss is total: a father and two children dead in a single moment on a routine journey. The surviving mother remains in hospital, and the rickshaw driver with her. Their recovery, and any police account of how the crash unfolded, will be worth following as more information is confirmed.
